Reasons for exercise

Why exercise?

Enjoyment.

Although it may seem hard to believe for novice exercisers, the main reason for participation in sport and exercise programmes is enjoyment. Although there may be little initial enjoyment for a person exercising, a previously inactive or sedentary body, physical activity should become increasingly enjoyable and rewarding as the level of fitness improves.

Health.

People today are becoming much more aware of the benefits of health related exercise as means of protection against illness, e.g. heart disease, hypertension and stress-related diseases. They may decide themselves to embark on an active exercise programme as part of their quest for a healthier lifestyle or they may be strongly recommended to do so by their doctor or specialist, following medical examination or illness.

Appearance and Weight Control.

A large proportion of those joining health clubs or attending exercise sessions are aiming to improve their appearance by improving their body composition, general muscle tone and posture.

Social / Fashion Status.

A significant number of people take up exercise because others are doing so e.g. it may be a status symbol to be a member of a particular health club. Equally, they may simply enjoy the social aspect of a group exercise situation and hopefully will continue the programme, once they begin to enjoy exercise for its own sake.

Rehabilitation.

It may only be following illness or injury, when the need for rehabilitation demands participation in exercise, that a programme is commenced.

General Fitness.

Individuals occasionally wake up in the morning and realise that they feel lethargic and tired, even before the day has begun. It is often for this reason that they join a fitness facility to improve their general all round fitness, including cardiovascular and muscle fitness as well as improved body composition.

Sport Specific Fitness.

Any individual taking up a new sport or perhaps returning to a sport after a long absence may wish to start a fitness programme before competing. It needs to be specific in its objectives in order to prepare physically for the demands of sporting activity or to improve levels of performance.

What gains are made from exercise ?

After a period of time, when exercise stops hurting, when the body seems to wake up, the mind becomes alert, and the feeling of overall tiredness wanes, exercise begins to feel enjoyable. The physical benefits of exercise starts to kick in. Now the body is ready to work. Psychologically the mind is more alert and aware of what the body needs and understands what it is capable of.
You will become more self-motivated by the overall benefits of feeling good, looking good, and enjoying the benefits of less stress.
