Take a natural antidepressant
One of the most important strategies in lifting depression is to raise the levels of a neurotransmitter chemical called serotonin – it creates the experience of being happy. The two safest and most effective ways of doing this are to take 5-HTP 100mg, once or twice daily or St Johns Wort extract daily. Both have been shown in clinical trials to be as effective as anti-depressant medications and achieve a positive improvement in mood symptoms with minimum side effects. In my own experience 5-HTP, which provides the building blocks for serotonin, works the best. It’s also good idea to buy a 5-HTP supplement which includes other nutrients such as vitamin B6 and Zinc as these will help with the conversion of 5-HTP into serotonin. If anxiety is also a problem, I would recommend taking a supplement that contains valerian, lemon balm and hops extract – these help to keep you calm and are fine to be taken with 5-HTP.Start exercising
Exercise is a strong antidepressant. Getting 30 minutes of exercise three to five times a week has been shown to be more effective in lowering depressive symptoms than taking an antidepressant alone. They key however is to find something that you find pleasurable, as the antidepressant effect of exercise wears off the moment you stop it!Factors that can cause stress include
- Processed diets
- High caffeine and alcohol intake
- Long working hours
- Financial debt
- Breakdown of communities and families
- Artificial living environments
- Abuse of drugs
- Nicotine
- Lack of exercise & relaxation
LEVEL TWO – Psycho-Emotional
The real key to lasting relief from depression is to redesign your lifestyle to one that meets your emotional needs and uses your strengths and talents in a healthy and balanced way. Doing so brings with it the experience of a fulfilled life and a good level of mental health.(published with permission in writing from:http://weblog.healthydirect.co.uk)
