Multiple births

Multiple pregnancies, especially triplets, can involve many more complications than a singleton pregnancy. Premature birth is the most significant, since babies born too soon may not survive or have serious life-long disabilities. High blood pressure and the increased need for a caesarian section can be additional problems.

For some couples, the simultaneous birth of more than one child is a welcome event and creates great happiness. But for others it can lead to great emotional and physical pressures as they try to cope with the demands of raising two children of the same age.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)

In relatively few cases – about 7% - hyperstimulation can occur when the ovary has been suppressed with buserelin and stimulated with gonadotrophins in the first stage of the IVF process. The severe form may have life threatening implications.

The ovaries swell and become painful, and the high oestrogen causes painful discomfort including nausea and vomiting. Fluid accumulates in the abdomen and sometimes around the lungs. A small number of women – 2% - will have severe symptoms and require hospital admission.

The condition subsides as the ovaries return to normal size but it is made worse by pregnancy or the additional injection of hCG (Profasi or Pregnyl).
