What are sexually transmitted diseases?


Sexually transmitted diseases (previously termed venereal disease or VD) are serious infections of the reproductive organs acquired during sexual contact. They may cause painful localized symptoms or a more generalized illness affecting the entire body. There are over 20 STDs that have been identified and more than 13 million Americans suffer from STDs each year. A number sexually transmitted diseases can be cured. Some STDs become chronic infections for which there is no known cure, while others such as HIV can be deadly. STDs can be physically and emotionally trying and can cause significant disruption in lifestyle. By understanding the signs and symptoms of STDs, along with the way they are spread, we can be better prepared to prevent them form occurring.

What happens if I don’t get treated for my infection?

Chlamydia

  • You may spread it to your sexual partner.
  • If left untreated the infection can spread to your uterus, tubes and ovaries. This can cause abscesses( pockets of pus) around the tubes and ovaries which requires hospitalization for antibiotic therapy and possible surgery.
  • Can cause infection in the eye leading to blindness.
  • Can be spread to infant during childbirth.
  • Long term complications include chronic pelvic pain and infertility (inability to have children)

Gonorrhea

  • May spread it to your sexual partner.
  • May spread to uterus, tubes and ovaries causing a more serious infection requiring hospitalization.
  • May cause infection in the heart, skin, joints (arthritis), and eyes causing blindness.
