Socks can cause problems if they do not fit well - they should not be too tight or curled up within shoes. Natural fibers are best when buying socks.
Toenail trimming is important. Young children's toenails curl rather than grow straight out like grown-ups. Sometimes so much so that they almost cut the skin. Baby and children's toenails should be cut regularly using a small sharp pair of scissors - they should always be cut straight across the nail. If nails are too long they can cause pressure points at the toes and can lead to ingrowing toenails.
Point to remember
- Keep bedcovers loose and light - even tight socks can harm a baby's feet
- Always keep feet clean and the nails cut straight across
- Never force a baby to walk - he will do in his own time.
- Make sure shoes and sandals are properly fitted for your child - don't share shoes
- Feet will always vary in size - have both feet measured before buying shoes
- New shoes should be properly fitted with growing space around them
- Shoes should have a snug fit around the heal and be adjustable around the step
- Have your child's feet checked every two/three months
- Children's feet go on developing until their late teens
