use, the roll technique - this method is fine for cleaning the teeth but pays little attention to the gum margins and, therefore, is not used for patients with gum disease, it is an awkward technique to master.

Modified stillman

This was designed for massage and stimulation as well as cleaning but is probably more difficulty to master than the roll method as it employs both a rolling and a vibratory type action. The brush should be placed with the filaments angled towards the tip of the roots and in contact with the gum tissue. It should then be pressed until the gum blanches (turns white). Turn the wrist through 45o and vibrate the brush repeat this for each tooth. You can see why this isn't widely used.

Fones

This was probably one the first methods taught by the dental profession especially in the USA. Dr Fones founded the first dental hygienists course in America and his technique was the standard method used for many years, it is often called the circular method. With the teeth closed place the tip of the filaments gently against the side of the molar (back) teeth. Sweep the brush vigorously over the tooth surface in a circular motion covering both upper and lower teeth working your way forward. When cleaning the anterior (front) teeth bring them edge to edge and continue brushing. To do the inside of the mouth use an in-and-out stroke making sure the brush comes in contact with the gum line. A soft brush must be used. For the occlusal (biting) surface place the brush against the tooth and then brush vigorously back and forward again working your to the front teeth. This is not often used or taught now as it is very easy to cause tooth brush abrasion. The right selection of brush is vitally important for all the preceding methods but must be coupled with an effective form of interdental cleaning.
