Osteoporosis: are you at risk?

Did you know that
- 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men aged over 50 will break a bone mainly due to osteoporosis
- Consequences of osteoporosis may include a fracture, particularly at the wrist, spine and hip, after the simplest knock or fall
Some of the factors that increase the risk of osteoporosis
For men and women
- Family history of maternal hip fracture
- More than 3 months use of
- Previous wrist or hip fracture due to a fall or a slight knock
- Noticeable height loss
- Low body weight
- More than 3 months use of steroid tablets
- Smoking
- Heavy drinking
For
women only
- Early menopause (before 45)
- Early hysterectomy (before 45)
- Missed periods for 6 months or more (excluding pregnancy)
For
men only
- Low levels of the male hormone, testosterone (hypogonadism)
