The flavonoids in the pith of citrus fruit help to strengthen blood vessels, as does Vitamin C – so when citrus fruit are eaten avoid peeling away every last bit of pith. Vitamin C is essential for building collagen for vein and skin integrity. Flavonoids in dark red berries such as blackcurrants, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries and cherries also have a similar effect on strengthening blood vessels – add to cereals at breakfast, drink smoothies, or eat as desserts or for snacks. Fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, pulses, nuts and seeds are also rich in fibre which helps to avoid the constipation and straining that can trigger haemorrhoids and varicose veins.
Herbal and Vitamin Helpers
There are several supplements which help to support leg vein health. It is important to take the early warnings of varicose veins seriously and to ward off future damage because prevention is better than cure.- Herbs: Horse Chestnut is a remedy as old as herbalism itself for treating varicose veins. The active compound is called aescin, and good quality products will ‘standardise’ the supplement to provide a certain amount. Ginkgo Biloba has been used in Chinese medicine over 3,000 years to improve blood flow to the extremities. Research has shown that Ginkgo reduces blood thickness, is an anti-inflammatory and has antioxidant effects important for blood vessel health. Butcher’s Broom is another herb traditionally used for varicose veins and related vascular conditions such as sluggish circulation and fluid retention. Bilberry contains powerful dark-purple coloured anthocyanins, a group of flavonoids, which help to strengthen blood vessels and prevent collagen breakdown to improve capillary fragility.
- Antioxidants: In addition to the antioxidant Vitamin C already mentioned, the antioxidant Vitamin E also has potent blood thinning properties, reducing platelet ‘stickiness’ which helps to keep blood flowing. Co-enzyme Q10 (also called CoQ10) is involved in making cellular energy and has been shown to reduce spider veins. The antioxidant properties of Pine Bark Extract and Grape Seed Extract are excellent for protecting vein structure against damage.
Contra Indications
Do not take Horse Chestnut, Ginkgo Biloba or Vitamin E with blood thinning medication such as Warfarin or aspirin. Avoid herbs when pregnant or breast feeding (though Bilberry and other dark red fruit are safe).Taking Control
