Omega 3: facts and sources

How is Omega 3 good for your heart?

Research suggests that omega 3 oils can help to decrease the risk of arrhythmias (disturbances in the heart rhythm), reduce blood cholesterol levels, decrease the risk of blood clots and slightly lower blood pressure, all of which contribute to a reduced heart disease risk.

Are there different types of omega 3 fatty acids?

Yes there are three types: eicosapentaenoic (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alphalinolenic acid (AHA). The first two, found in oily fish and sea plants, are long chain fatty acids and are the most beneficial to the body. The third is a short chain and cannot be used as efficiently, but is still useful as part of a varied and balenced diet. It is found primarily in dark green leafy vegetables, flaxseed oils and certain vegetable oils.

Which fish are the oily ones, that contain omega 3?

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are found in oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, fresh tuna, sardines, herring, kippers, pilchards, trout and anchovies.
