The South Beach Diet: What to do?

The South Beach Diet: What to do?Dr. Arthur Agatston, cardiologist in South Beach, developed a diet for his overweight heart patients. Thanks to the successful results of his patients it became well known in Miami and beyond. You can find the diet in his book The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss or inline at southbeachdiet.com.

What’s it about ?

This diet isn’t about eating less or just going easy on the carbs. It encourages you to chose the right things to eat and to think about what you put in your mouth. Whole grains, certain fruits and vegetables are key ingredients. What you shouldn’t touch are highly processed foods and soft drinks.

How to go about it ?

The programme is divided into three phases:

    • Kick-starting your weight loss
    • Reintroducing the right carbs
    • A diet for life

Phase 1

This phase lasts for two weeks. In these weeks you’ll learn what to eat and what not. Don’t worry, you won’t go hungry. According to the plan you should eat three balanced meals plus mandatory snacks. The snacks are there to make sure you’re kept satisfied so you won’t overeat at your next meal. The things you shouldn’t touch are bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and baked goods. In this phase you’re even not meant to eat fruit. However this will be reintroduced in phase 2. Candy, cake, ice cream, sugar and alcohol are also no goes. At first this might be hard but after a few days it will get easier. read more
