possible to come through what can only be described as the “black mood”. We have been there and it is not easy, but it can be done. Do not give up hope, keep the sufferer talking to you and eventually they will realise and want to get better.

Although it may not seem a good idea at the time, we found it easier that all members of the family that are directly involved with the sufferer, be informed about the situation. The illness is hard to understand, but we found it essential that members of the family are aware and could then offer support, not only to the sufferer but to you also. You must not waste your time trying to cover it from other people. That will only make things harder. Although these people will probably never get directly involved with the recovery of a sufferer, unless you want them to, it will be easier to cope not having to hide the fact. They will also be there for you. Having someone for you to talk to is important.

It is essential to understand that this is an illness and not “just a phase they are going through”. The sufferers are not stupid and as many people used to think “just need a good talking to”; they genuinely do need help.
