Insomnia: what can you do about it?Insomnia is the chronic inability to sleep or to remain asleep throughout the night. It is a common complaint suffered by 1 in 3 adults at some point in their lives. Insomnia causes other problems in the daytime such as fatigue, irritability and headaches.

The causes of insomnia include stress or worry, depression, caffeine and alcohol, environmental factors such as noise, physical disorders causing pain, sleep apnoea (see Snoring page), restless legs, prostate problems (see Prostate page), the use of some drugs, both prescribed and illegal.

Doctors usually prescribe sleeping tablets but these can be addictive and do not address the cause of the insomnia.
