General information about chronic fatigue syndromeChronic Fatigue Syndrome is a serious and disabling illness it's symptoms are severe and persistent exhaustion which worsens following exercise and does not resolve with rest in combination with: headaches, poor concentration and memory, sleep disturbances, joint and muscle pain, neurological problems, flu-like symptoms such as low-grade fever, sore throat, and enlarged lymph glands. It is not simply chronic fatigue, which can be caused by insufficient sleep or overwork.

(CFS) (ME) strikes people of all age groups, including a growing number of children. Women between 25 and 40 are most at risk. At present, there is no cure, yet resources are scarce.

There is no specific diagnostic test for CFS, but a qualified physician can make the diagnosis. The following guidelines will tell you what you need to know.
You might suspect you have CFS if you have persistent or relapsing fatigue that is not alleviated by rest and causes you to significantly reduce your activity level. Be aware of other symptoms, including impaired memory, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, muscle or joint pain without swelling, headaches of a new type or severity, unrefreshing sleep, or exhaustion following exercise. Realize that your symptoms must have persisted for six months since the onset of the fatigue in order to receive an 'official' diagnosis.
