Arthritis: cause and treatment
Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints or the muscles which can cause great pain, stiffness and discomfort. There are any different types of
arthritis and their effect varies greatly. The effects can range from the people who have the occasional "twinge" of pain in the joints, to the 10% of sufferers who are in constant agony and have severely limited mobility. If the arthritis sufferer is to get well, their circulation must be restored; the
nervous system improved and the body strengthened and re-built.
Types of Arthritis
Osteo-arthritis
This is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs mainly in the
weight bearing joints such as the hip, knee and spine. The condition is caused by the wear and tear of the cartilage, a tough elastic tissue which protects the surface of the joint. Consequently, the bone thickens and spreads out, causing the joints to become stiff and painful to move.
Rheumatoid arthritis
This is the most severe type of the disease. The body's
auto-immune system flares up causing inflammation and damage to the joints. The
synovial membrane which lines the joints becomes inflamed. The joint may fill up with a fluid giving rise to inflammation, pain and limited mobility.
Juvenile arthritis
Stills disease, polyarthritis and pauci-articularthritis are all forms of juvenile chronic arthritis. Happily, most children grow up normally, but for a few there is some loss of height and joint damage.
