Children and heart disease

Children and heart diseaseResearch has shown that heart disease originates in childhood. With obesity on the increase in children and young people it is easy to see why. Poor diet and inactivity are growing problems among children today. It is only now that the problem has reached epidemic proportions that action is being taken.

On the increase

Childhood obesity has doubled in the last ten years and now one in four children in England is obese. Heart Research UK’s National Director, Barbara Harpham, said, “Being obese can cause heart disease and it is shocking that children as young as two years old are showing signs of it. This obesity epidemic will inevitably create even more heart patients of the future, as being obese causes a real strain on the heart, it can increase blood pressure and levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol and it’s more likely that you’ll develop diabetes or suffer a stroke.”

Parents can encourage good habits

“It is up to parents to make sure their children eat properly and lay down a foundation for good health. Giving your kids treats may make you feel good now, but imagine how you will feel 20 years down the line? Stop taking children everywhere in the car too and get them more active, as the two go together. We are doing our bit by going into schools teaching kids the importance of keeping their hearts healthy, by encouraging them to eat a healthy balanced diet, take regular exercise and not smoke."
